“ALBERTO CASTIGLIANO” COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS CENTRE
&
LABORATORY OF FRACTURE MECHANICS

Politecnico di Torino
Dipartimento di Ingegneria Strutturale e Geotecnica

Description: The Fracture Mechanics Laboratory and Computational Mechanics Centre “Alberto Castigliano” was established in 1999 according to the proposal of its actual director, Prof. Alberto Carpinteri, and with a financial support from the Politecnico di Torino. The Research Centre is located in the Department of Structural Engineering and Geothecnics and develops on two different floors covering an area of approximately 350 m2. There are different working and studying areas for PhD and Master Students: 6 positions close to the Fracture Mechanics Laboratory and 12 positions in the Computational Centre. The latter can alternatively function as a meeting room with its effective audio-visual system.
The Centre and Laboratory mission consists in the investigation, development and application of novel computational models for Solids and Structures Mechanics. Special emphasis is devoted to the following topics:

  1. Materials Strength;
  2. Structural Durability;
  3. Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue Behaviour;
  4. Fragmentation and Comminution;
  5. Drilling;
  6. Acoustic Emission and Structural Monitoring;
  7. Structural Retrofitting and Rehabilitation;
  8. Fiber-reinforced Composite Materials;
  9. Contact Mechanics;
  10. Aeroelasticity in Long-span Bridges;
  11. Stability of Shell Structures;
  12. Tall Buildings;
  13. Scale and Size Effects.
